Birmingham and the West Midlands

Noise monitoring for construction sites across Birmingham

Birmingham has more major construction under way than almost any city outside London: Paradise, Smithfield, Digbeth, the Jewellery Quarter, Eastside and the Curzon Street area, Perry Barr, plus large schemes across Solihull, the Black Country and Coventry. Most of them are hemmed in by homes, student accommodation, hotels and offices. Birmingham City Council and the neighbouring authorities commonly expect a Section 61 consent or a construction management plan with noise limits and monitoring for demolition, piling and night work, with BS 5228 as the basis.

We install and support monitors on West Midlands sites from our Bristol base, with the dashboard live before we leave site and the data checked by a consultant. Units can also be shipped for self-installation with remote commissioning where that suits the programme better. We prepare Section 61 applications and the noise reports needed to discharge planning conditions.

Local authorities we work with:

  • Birmingham City Council
  • Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council
  • Walsall Council
  • City of Wolverhampton Council
  • Coventry City Council

How a Section 61 works

How it works

Enquiry to live data in four steps

  1. 1

    Tell us about the site

Where in the West Midlands, the programme, the nearest homes and any limits already imposed. A fixed weekly price per monitor follows, normally within one working day.

  2. 2

    Agree the thresholds

Monitoring positions, early-warning levels and the alert list are agreed with you, and with the council where a consent or condition requires it.

  3. 3

    Install or ship

Units go on a fence post, hoarding or tripod and connect over 4G. We install across the West Midlands, or ship units for your team to fit with remote commissioning.

  4. 4

    Monitor, alert, advise

Alerts reach your team immediately and reports go to the client or council. If the readings show a problem building, a consultant calls with practical options.

Questions from Birmingham sites

Construction noise monitoring in Birmingham, explained

More general questions are answered on the main FAQ, and there are practical guides in our articles.

Do I need a Section 61 consent for a construction site in Birmingham?

A Section 61 consent is not compulsory, but Birmingham City Council and the neighbouring authorities often expect one, or a construction management plan with noise limits and monitoring, for major demolition, piling or out-of-hours working, and many planning permissions carry a condition requiring it. A contractor working to an agreed consent is protected from Section 60 action for those works. We put the application together and agree it with the council.

What hours can noisy construction work take place in Birmingham?

Birmingham City Council and the neighbouring authorities generally limit noisy construction to weekday daytimes and Saturday mornings, with no noisy work on Sundays or bank holidays. Your exact hours are set in the consent or planning condition, and work outside them needs the council's prior agreement. Monitoring is the simplest way to show they were kept.

How quickly can you install a noise monitor on a site in Birmingham?

Normally within a few working days of instruction. We install across the West Midlands or ship units for self-installation with remote commissioning. They connect over 4G, fitting takes under an hour and the dashboard is live the same day.

Which areas around Birmingham do you cover?

All of Birmingham and the West Midlands, including Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Smethwick, West Bromwich, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Coventry, plus Redditch, Tamworth and the surrounding towns.

Can you monitor vibration on Birmingham sites as well as noise?

Yes. Vibration monitors recording PPV (peak particle velocity) run alongside the noise monitors on one dashboard. Birmingham sites usually need them for piling and demolition near Victorian terraces, canal-side structures and listed buildings in the city centre and Jewellery Quarter.
