London

Noise monitoring for construction sites across London

Nowhere in the UK is construction noise watched more closely than London. Most boroughs expect a Section 61 consent for major demolition, piling and basement works, several publish their own codes of construction practice, and continuous noise and vibration monitoring at the boundary is a standard condition on larger schemes. Residents, hotels and offices are often within a few metres of the hoarding.

We install and support monitors on London sites from our Bristol base, with the dashboard live before we leave site and the data checked by a consultant. Units can also be shipped for self-installation with remote commissioning where that suits the programme better. We know what the London boroughs ask for in a Section 61 application and how to get one agreed.

Local authorities we work with:

  • City of London Corporation
  • Westminster City Council
  • London Borough of Camden
  • London Borough of Tower Hamlets
  • London Borough of Southwark
  • London Borough of Islington
  • and the other London boroughs

How a Section 61 works

How it works

Enquiry to live data in four steps

  1. 1

    Send us the site details

Address, programme, the nearest receptors and any borough requirements already in play. A fixed weekly price per monitor follows, normally within one working day.

  2. 2

    Fix the thresholds

We agree monitoring positions, early-warning levels and the alert list with you and, where the consent requires it, with the borough.

  3. 3

    Install or ship

Units go on the hoarding, a fence post or a tripod and connect over 4G. We install in London, or ship units for your team to fit with remote commissioning.

  4. 4

    Watch, warn, advise

Alerts go to the people you name and reports to the people who need them. When the data shows a developing problem, a consultant calls with practical options.

Questions from London sites

Construction noise monitoring in London, explained

More general questions are answered on the main FAQ, and there are practical guides in our articles.

Do I need a Section 61 consent for a construction site in London?

Most London boroughs expect a Section 61 consent for major demolition, piling, basement construction or any out-of-hours working, and several have codes of construction practice that say so. A Section 61 consent is prior agreement with the borough on hours, plant, predicted levels and Best Practicable Means, and working to it gives protection against Section 60 action. We prepare the application and agree it with the borough's environmental health team.

What hours can noisy construction work take place in London?

Standard hours in most London boroughs are weekday daytimes and Saturday mornings, with no noisy work on Sundays or bank holidays, although the exact hours vary by borough and are fixed in your Section 61 consent or planning condition. Work outside them, including night possessions, normally needs prior dispensation from the borough. Continuous monitoring is the usual way of showing the hours have been kept.

How quickly can you install a noise monitor on a site in London?

Normally within a few working days. A consultant installs on site, or we ship the units for your team to mount with remote commissioning. Either way they connect over 4G, fitting takes under an hour per position and the dashboard is live that day.

Which parts of London do you cover?

All 32 boroughs and the City of London, from central London and the Docklands to the outer boroughs, and sites in the Home Counties around the M25.

Can you monitor vibration on London sites as well as noise?

Yes. Vibration monitors measuring PPV (peak particle velocity) share the dashboard and alerts with the noise kit. London sites usually need them for piling and demolition near Victorian terraces, listed buildings, basements, tunnels and railway assets.
