Exeter and Devon

Noise monitoring for construction sites across Exeter

Exeter and the towns around it are growing quickly: city centre and riverside regeneration, the new community at Cranbrook, the science park and employment land along the M5, and housing on the edge of most Devon towns. Much of it is close to existing homes, and Exeter City Council and the neighbouring districts commonly attach noise conditions to planning permissions and expect a Section 61 consent or construction management plan with monitoring for larger or noisier phases, with BS 5228 as the basis.

Exeter is a short drive from our Bristol base, so installs, site visits and complaint investigations across Devon can be arranged quickly, and the dashboard is live before we leave site. We also prepare Section 61 applications and the noise reports needed to discharge planning conditions for Devon sites.

Local authorities we work with:

  • Exeter City Council
  • East Devon District Council
  • Teignbridge District Council
  • Mid Devon District Council
  • Torbay Council

How a Section 61 works

How it works

Enquiry to live data in four steps

  1. 1

    Describe the site

Location in Devon, programme, nearest homes and any noise limits already imposed. We quote a fixed weekly price per monitor, usually within one working day.

  2. 2

    Set the thresholds

Monitoring positions, early-warning levels and the alert list are agreed with you, and with the council where the condition or consent needs it.

  3. 3

    Fit and switch on

A consultant drives down from Bristol and mounts the units on a fence post, hoarding or tripod. They connect over 4G and the dashboard is live before we leave.

  4. 4

    Monitor and advise

Alerts go to your team and reports to the client or council. If the readings start climbing, a consultant calls to work out what to change on site.

Questions from Exeter sites

Construction noise monitoring in Exeter, explained

More general questions are answered on the main FAQ, and there are practical guides in our articles.

Do I need a Section 61 consent for a construction site in Exeter?

A Section 61 consent is not compulsory, but Exeter City Council and the neighbouring districts often expect one, or a construction management plan with noise limits and monitoring, for major demolition, piling or out-of-hours working, and many planning permissions carry a condition requiring it. Carrying out the works in line with an agreed consent protects the contractor from Section 60 action on those works. We write the application and get it agreed with the council.

What hours can noisy construction work take place in Exeter?

Planning conditions and consents from Exeter City Council and the Devon districts normally limit noisy work to weekday daytimes and Saturday mornings, with nothing noisy on Sundays or bank holidays. Your own hours are written into the condition or consent, and anything outside them should be agreed with the council in advance. The monitoring record shows the hours were respected.

How quickly can you install a noise monitor on a site in Exeter?

Typically within a few working days of instruction. Exeter is under two hours from Bristol, the units connect over 4G, and fitting takes under an hour, so the dashboard is usually live the day we visit.

Which areas around Exeter do you cover?

All of Exeter and the surrounding area, including Cranbrook, Exmouth, Topsham, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, Crediton, Tiverton, Cullompton, Honiton and Okehampton, plus Torbay and Plymouth and the rest of Devon and Cornwall.

Can you monitor vibration on Exeter sites as well as noise?

Yes. We monitor PPV (peak particle velocity) on the same dashboard as noise. Typical reasons in Devon are piling or demolition near older housing, listed buildings and the historic centre of Exeter.
